This compound is used to produce hydrophilic SAMs. In addition, monolayers terminated with carboxylic acids can be further modified with various amines and alcohols to introduce more complex end groups (R. G. Chapman, et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2000, 122, 8303).
